Who We Are
[Who we are ] [Community Leadership]
We are a justice-seeking faith community…
… a diverse circle of people who share a common vision for a city that welcomes the stranger, seeks justice for every person, and builds peace and harmony between neighbours.
Our work and play, growth and vitality move in 5 ways:
- Passionate Spirituality We believe that love for beauty, search for truth, desire for relationships, and hunger for justice, are important expressions of human spirituality. Thus we spend a lot of time in disciplined prayer and study fostering the spiritual life within each of us. As we become more passionate about our spirituality, so does our wonder of the mystery and joy of life. Each week we take time out to connect as a community to reflect on what’s been going in our lives, which brings both celebration and deeper prayer for one another. We also seek to offer inspiration through conversation and teaching for the week ahead. ‘river’ is one of our weekly gatherings for creativity and worship…
- Intentional Community In an age shaped by radical individualism, the Jeremiah Project is about reclaiming the radical notion of deep community. This counter-cultural practice is challenging but also deeply rewarding. In community we discover deeper love and forgiveness, and the surprising joy of living more simply by sharing what we have in common. We hope, by inviting people to try intentional community living with us, we can build stronger relationships between neighbours in our city. The Jeremiah Community has a ‘rhythm of life’ which we seek to live out (in various ways) so that we can be accountable to each other as we seek to recover the ancient practices of simplicity, hospitality (welcoming the stranger) and pilgrimage, prayer and meditation, justice-seeking, peace-making, outreach, and learning in our daily lives. We’re developing a model of intentional community that embraces people living in both ‘the village’ of the neighbourhood, as well as in shared community houses within the neighbourhood.
- Spiritual Growth We know from experience that becoming more aware of our spirituality is a journey, so we don’t expect everyone to be at the same place or even believe what we have come to believe. We hope that by encouraging open and honest conversations about spirituality among individuals and in the wider community, we can find common space to explore more deeply the universal issues of truth, beauty, justice, and relationships. By having these conversations, we hope that together we can learn how to strive for these ideals more intentionally, much the same way Jesus enabled others to do through his conversations with people in his own time. We provide mentoring, community formation groups, conferences and parties, community study on the wisdom of sacred scripture, and spiritual direction for anyone interested in personal growth. Keep your eye on the site for upcoming events.
- Radical Giving The result of life together is that we begin to challenge one another concerning our lifestyle in terms of time, talent, and money. The intentional community becomes the environment wherein we can learn to take steps toward embracing the simple(r) life. It is the setting in which we sense caring and acceptance which are the foundations of self-worth that allow us to take risks and be vulnerable. By learning to give more of ourselves, we learn to receive from others. And so it goes! The Jeremiah Community seeks to foster radical giving in our neighbourhood.
- Neighbourhood Connections The Jeremiah Community seeks to develop social networks and partnerships in the neighbourhood that address the holistic needs of those living in the area.
As far as the actual project goes, it’s funded by the Anglican Diocese (area) of Toronto, and is located in the historic parish (neighbourhood & building) of St. Anne’s, in the Dundas St W. and Dufferin neighbourhood of Toronto.
